The retirement of Default Outbound Access is scheduled for March 31, 2026\u2014and if you build (or redeploy) VMs the \u201cold way\u201d after that date, they may no longer be able to reach the Internet unless you configure outbound explicitly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2434d0f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2434d0f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is \u201cDefault Outbound Access\u201d?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71279e66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71279e66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Historically, Azure virtual machines deployed into a Virtual Network (VNet) could sometimes reach the Internet <em>without<\/em> you setting up any specific outbound path. Azure would provide outbound connectivity using a shared, non-deterministic public IP behind the scenes. It was convenient\u2014but from a security and operational standpoint, it can be hard to control, audit, and troubleshoot.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d8f2d79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4d8f2d79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What\u2019s changing on March 31, 2026?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-785340aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"785340aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Starting <strong>March 31, 2026<\/strong>, Azure will permanently retire Default Outbound Access. Any <strong>new<\/strong> VM (or redeployed VM) that depends on this implicit behavior could <strong>lose outbound<\/strong> <strong>Internet connectivity<\/strong>\u2014which can lead to failed updates, broken package installs, telemetry gaps, inability to reach external APIs, and service disruption.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-500264d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"500264d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Are existing VMs impacted?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6804684a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6804684a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Existing virtual machines and network resources deployed before March 31, 2026 are not expected to be immediately impacted\u2014their outbound access should continue to function. However, relying on legacy implicit behavior is not a long-term strategy. Treat this as a planned modernization effort to align with Azure networking and security best practices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-baa80c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"baa80c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Three ways to replace Default Outbound Access<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49ef976c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49ef976c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>1) Assign a Public IP directly to the VM<\/strong> <br \/>This is the simplest approach and can be cost-effective for very small or temporary environments. The trade-off is that the VM becomes directly addressable from the Internet, which can increase exposure and typically requires tighter hardening, network security rules, and operational controls.<\/p><p><strong>2) Use a NAT Gateway (recommended for most scenarios)<\/strong> <br \/>A NAT Gateway provides dedicated, predictable outbound connectivity for all VMs in a subnet\u2014without exposing the VMs directly to the Internet. It\u2019s a strong default choice when you want scalable outbound, a stable public IP, and a cleaner security posture.<\/p><p><strong>3) Configure outbound rules on an Azure Standard Load Balancer<\/strong> <br \/>If you already have an Azure Standard Load Balancer in place, outbound rules can be used to provide and control Internet egress for backend pool VMs. This option is especially relevant in architectures that already depend on a load balancer for inbound traffic and want to consolidate networking components.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fea2aea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2fea2aea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What you should do now (practical checklist)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d257e11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d257e11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Inventory<\/strong> virtual machines and workloads that may rely on implicit outbound connectivity (the Azure portal and Azure Advisor can help flag them).<\/li><li>For <strong>new deployments<\/strong>, update your landing zones \/ templates now so outbound is always explicit (Public IP, NAT Gateway, or Standard Load Balancer outbound rules).<\/li><li><strong>Test<\/strong> your chosen approach in a non-production environment, including OS updates, package repositories, external API calls, and backup\/monitoring agents.<\/li><li>For <strong>existing environments<\/strong>, plan a phased upgrade even if you\u2019re not immediately impacted\u2014this reduces risk and aligns with best practices.<\/li><li><strong>Communicate<\/strong> with stakeholders and clients early so the change is understood, budgeted, and scheduled.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ea9f816 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3ea9f816\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Bottom line<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c3d7656 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c3d7656\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Default Outbound Access retirement is one of those changes that\u2019s easy to miss\u2014until a deployment suddenly can\u2019t reach the Internet.
